Airtightness and Permeability in Building Materials

Airtightness and Permeability in Building Materials

The airtightness and the vapour permeability of a building’s materials are strictly controlled. Between them they save energy, regulate dampness and are crucial to the environment within the building and thus the health of the people who work or live inside.  Both of these can now be measured with the Versaperm Vapour Permeability and Airtightness meter.

Although Permeability and Airtightness are regulated by different building legislative regulations and guidelines, the new system exploits the similarity in the underlying physical principals to measure each of them.  This substantially reduces the costs when compared to conventional testing. The system can test all types of building materials.

Results from the Versaperm’s new dual system are typically accurate in the parts per million range and it can optionally measure vapour permeability not just for air and water vapour but also for CO2, hydrocarbons, oxygen and virtually any other legal gas or vapour.

As well as the new equipment Versaperm also offers a consultancy and a laboratory based testing service which will measure these properties.

The system can also simulate a wide range of climatic and environmental temperature and humidity conditions and even lets the user simulate diurnal and seasonal cycles.  It can even cycle through various climate and warming scenarios if required.

Understanding the ways materials respond leads not just to regulatory compliance but it potentially reduces heating and cooling costs as well as effectively eliminating mould growth or rot.
